Sometime near this date in 1965, Bob Finch, 22, of Bass Lake, accidentally caught a snapping turtle while fishing at Riverside Creek. Within minutes, he let it go back into the water.

His fiancee, Clara, watching him from nearby, wanted to keep the reptile as a pet. Mr. Finch said the animal should go back to its natural surroundings.

“I want to take it home, too,” he told her. “But that ain’t me, babe.”
