Bass Lake High School’s softball team notched its first win of the 2017 season on Friday, thumping the Prairie Depths Female Housecats, 10-9, in the first game of a Moonshine Conference doubleheader.

Kristilla Jankney, senior first basegirl for the Young Lady Canoes, cracked a triple in the final inning to drive in the winning run, scored by a fellow teammate, whose name the Beacon was unable to verify.

Within a minute after the triumph, Bass Lake head coach “Ed” McGomery smiled out loud.

“You don’t know how good this feels,” McGomery said to someone in the bleachers. “Seriously, you don’t.”

Both teams hit the ball well, but Prairie Depths did not help its cause in the field, committing six errors. Afterward, Housecats coach Ed Grimpton was asked to elaborate.

“You call ’em errors, I call it making too damn many mistakes, simple as that, if you know what I mean, for goodness sake,” Grimpton said. “Cryin’ out loud.”

In the second game of the twin bill, Tri-County edged the Canoes, 19-0.

Bass Lake’s record is now 1-9. Next up: a game next Tuesday at Countryfarm, where BLSH hasn’t won in almost 11 months.
