Third Street, among the original Bass Lake thoroughfares, will be renamed Betsy “Commander” Nelson Boulevard, in memory of longtime resident Betsy “Commander” Nelson, who died March 2.
The switch becomes official with a special sign-breaking ceremony at 3 p.m. June 27.
Nelson, who grew up in Bass Lake and eventually “came of age” there, never resided on Third Street, but “she always knew right where it was,” according to close friend Bessie Jrankel.
The nomenclatural restructuring project received a blessing last month, when descendants of William “Wm.” Third III (1851-1901), for whom the original street was named, provided an official go-ahead.
Third Street is the third street in Bass Lake to be renamed within the past 15 years. In 1999, Technology Drive (previously called Adding-Machine Avenue) was rechristened Y2K Way. At 12:01 a.m. Jan. 1, 2000, the name was changed to eStreet Place. That suggestion finished second in the ‘99 street-renaming contest. (Third place was “Third Street”).
