Pancake enthusiast attends 95th extravaganza

Sid Claussen, 96, has attended every Bass Lake Pancake Extravaganza, with the exception of five: Once when he left home to fight in the Battle Against Economic Tinkering and Tea-Totaling Normalcy in 1933; and four times when he wasn’t even alive yet.

Claussen did so again Saturday at the 100th annual extravaganza, held at the big VFW hall on Main Street Avenue.

How did this year’s meal stack up to the others?

“Delicious,” the 96-year-old Claussen said after a bite of a batter-based disk. “Pancakes here, they’re as good as they always was, and ever will be.”

Claussen, then 96, died of a syrup overdose later in the day. Funeral arrangements are pending.
